This general 20 step porcedure, basic to all adoptions, allows for time and money management. Each step will have a time and finacial cost. Mission of T.E.A.R.S. divides the 20 steps into 4 phases each containing 5 steps. This simple overview allows a quick and efficient summarization of where you are in your adoption. It also helps to organize the begining of an adoption. 


TIMELINE FOR ADOPTION PROCESS – AKA 20-Step Procedure

Phase I: File and Family Preparation (first 5 steps)

1. Application and Interview

2. Homestudy (Find Adoption Practitioner)

3. Community & Social Services (Provincial Approval)

4. Immigration (CIC Sponsorship file)

5. Document Accumulation (see Document Checklist)

Phase II: File Preparation pre-forwarding (second 5 steps)

6. Ensure Your Travel Documents (i.e. Passport) are in order

7. Lawyer -- Notarization (Visit Lawyer)

8. External Affairs (Ottawa)

9. Authentication at Consulate

10. Review of File
      
Phase III: Preparations for Overseas File Application and Adoption (third 5)

11. File Forwarding
              
12. Initial Foreign Adoption Costs

13. Travel to Country (timing of this step differs for each country - Some require 2 trips)

14. Child Proposal

15.  Immigration Medical for Child

Phase IV:  Court Adoption Proceeding Finalized and return home (last 5 steps)

18. Post-Adoption Support Service through Social Worker
